Gnosis Chain to Transition to Ethereum L2 via Hard Fork in Spring 2027

Gnosis has officially announced its strategic pivot to transform Gnosis Chain from an independent Layer 1 (L1) blockchain into a specialized Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) rollup. According to a blog post published by the project, the transition is scheduled for Spring 2027 via a network hard fork. This move will integrate the network into the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ), making it the first general-purpose zone to settle directly on the Ethereum mainnet while maintaining its existing state and infrastructure.

Strategic Integration into the Ethereum Economic Zone

The migration is part of the GIP-153 proposal, which aims to address the high costs of maintaining independent security and solve the problem of liquidity fragmentation. Gnosis stated that operating as a standalone L1 currently costs the Gnosis DAO between $7 million and $10 million annually, largely due to staking subsidies and infrastructure maintenance. By transitioning to an L2 model, the network will inherit Ethereum’s robust security while gaining synchronous composability.

Key features for users and developers during the transition:

  • All smart contracts, balances, and addresses will remain unchanged.
  • The network Chain ID will be preserved to avoid service disruptions.
  • xDAI will continue to serve as the native gas token.
  • Developers will not be required to redeploy their existing decentralized applications (dApps).

Economic Impact and Validator Retirement

A significant consequence of this transition is the retirement of Gnosis Chain’s current validator set. The network currently boasts approximately 200,000 independent validators, a figure second only to Ethereum. However, once the chain begins settling to the mainnet, this decentralized set will no longer be necessary for consensus.

Ethereum is not scaling into one economy; it's scaling into a hundred islands. This proposal is Gnosis choosing the other path. After the transition, a Gnosis account will be able to use anything on Ethereum. Same block, no bridges.

The change will result in the unlocking of roughly 350,000 GNO tokens, which represents about 27% of the circulating supply. While these tokens are already part of the supply, their release from staking contracts will increase liquid market availability. Following the transition, Gnosis expects to rank among the top ten Ethereum L2s by Decentralized Finance (DeFi) Total Value Locked (TVL).

Future Outlook and Technical Milestones

The Ethereum Economic Zone, co-developed with Zisk and co-funded by the Ethereum Foundation, represents a new framework for ZK-proven rollups. The primary goal is to allow smart contracts on Gnosis to call contracts on the Ethereum mainnet within a single atomic transaction, eliminating the need for traditional bridging mechanisms that often introduce latency and security risks.

The Gnosis development team plans to launch an initial version of the EEZ infrastructure between late 2026 and early 2027, leading up to the final L1-to-L2 transition in the spring. This evolution marks a significant shift in the project's philosophy, prioritizing deep integration with the broader Ethereum ecosystem over maintaining an independent, competing Layer 1 architecture.
